From the Old Bailey.com:

Edward Bromfield of the Parish of St. Dunstans in the East , was indicted for Robbing Thomas Starke on the Highway, and taking from him a Bever Hat, value 50 s. on the 30th of July last (1696). It appeared, that as he was going home about 9 at night, that the Prisoner came up to him and snatcht his Hat off his Head, and ran away; and being pursued, he dropt it upon the Ground: The Prisoner could not tell what to say for himself, but Witnesses appeared for him, declared, that he was Lunatick. The Jury taking it into consideration, acquitted him .
