The Marriage Licence for John's first marriage states "John Pettman of Sturry, butcher, bachelor, about 24 and Elizabeth Young of Hougham, virgin, about 20 whose parents being dead she is under the government of widow Young of St. Margaret's"

The marriage licence for John's second marriage says "John Pettman of Sturry, butcher, widower and Ann Gilbert of All Saints, Canterbury, virgin, about 22 daughter of Unknown Gilbert alias White, wife of Edward White of the same parish who consents as is testified."

• Marriage: to Ann Gilbert, 5 November 1641, All Saints Church, Canterbury, Kent.

• Occupation: Butcher.
