William Mercer had 6 boys, 5 of which he sent to Utica, New York, America and all prospered. The youngest, Dr. Alfred Mercer was chairman of the committee that founded the Upstate Medical Center at Syacuse, New York.

On William's gravestone:

Sacred to the Memory of William Mercer Late of this Parish who died October 31, 1851 Aged 77 years, Mary Mercer Died March 25, 1863 aged 85 years. Had issue Eliza who died November 20, 1839 aged 35 years Left surviving William, Joseph, James, Stephen, George and Alfred.

In his Will made 08 Apr 1847, William, a Gentleman appointed his son, William of Yalding, Kent a Farmer and his friend Thomas Walker of Appledore, Kent a Grazier as Executors

William's wife Mary died on 25 March 1863 aged 84 and was also buried at Tenterden, Kent.
