General Notes: Aubrey de Vere was created the 1st Earl of Oxford in 1142 by the Empress Matilda and recognised as such by King Stephen I. The Earl of Oxford title was held be the de Vere's from from 1142 to 1703. Noted events in his life were: • Marriage: to Beatrice de Gand, 1139. • Marriage: to Eufeme de Cauntelo, 1152. • Marriage: to Agnes of Essex, 1163. Aubrey married Agnes of Essex, daughter of Lord Henry of Essex and Cecily De Valognes, in 1163. (Agnes of Essex was born in 1152 in Haughley, Suffolk, died in 1206 in Castle Hedingham, Essex and was buried in 1206 in Earls Cone Priory , Essex.) |
