Hugh de Vere was the 4th Earl of Oxford and was knighted on 22 May 1233 by King Henry III. On 24 May 1233 Henry gave him the sword of the Earldom of Oxford. He founded a hospital at Castle Hedingham around 1250, and was a benefactor to Colchester Abbey and Hatfield Priory.
