William was one of the original witnesses to the Magna Carta.
William was present when the foundations stones of Salisbury Cathedral were laid, and was the first person to be buried there.

• Marriage: to Ela FitzPatrick, 1196.
William married Countess Ela FitzPatrick, daughter of Earl William FitzPatrick and Unknown, in 1196. (Countess Ela FitzPatrick was born in 1187 in Amesbury, Wiltshire and died on 24 August 1261 in Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire.)
