Joan was in service of the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk (Agnes Tylney) and had an affair with Edward Walgrave whom she later married at the same time that Catherine Horward the future queen was there.

In December 1541 Joan Ackworth along with many others including her future husband, Edward Walgrave, were indicted in connection with the trial for adultery of Queen Catherine Howard with Francis Derham. She was charged with "with holding from His Majesty the King knowledge of certain letters which has been confiscated from a chest". She was sent to the Tower of London during the trial and recieved a life sentence but was later pardoned. Her future husband was also pardoned.

Joan married Edward Walgrave, son of George Walgrave and Lady Anne Drury, in June 1556. (Edward Walgrave was born in 1514, died on 13 August 1584 in Lawford, Essex and was buried on 17 August 1584 in Lawford, Essex.)
