Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine
(1124-1204) |
Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine
General Notes: On 18 May 1152, at Poitiers at the age of 19, Henry married Eleanor of Aquitaine. The wedding was "without the pomp or ceremony that befitted their rank, partly because Eleanor's prior marriage to Louis VII of France had been annulled only two months previously. Their relationship, always stormy, eventually disintegrated: after Eleanor encouraged her children to rebel against their father and in 1173 Henry had her placed under house arrest where she remained for fifteen years. Noted events in her life were: • Marriage: to King Louis VII of France, 22 July 1137, Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitaine, France. • Marriage: to King Henry II Plantagenet, 18 May 1152, Bordeaux, Gironde, France. Eleanor married King Henry II Plantagenet, son of Count Geoffrey Plantagenet and Empress Matilda of Germany, on 11 May 1152 in Bordeaux, Gironde, France. (King Henry II Plantagenet was born on 5 March 1133 in Le Mans, Maine, France, died on 6 July 1189 in Chinon, Indre-et-Loire, France and was buried in Fontevraud Abbey, France.) |
