William was 4 years old when he was baptised and this took place on the same day that his brother Albert William Hamlin and sister Harriet Elizabeth Hamlin were christened.

William was educated at Clapham School and then Holy Trinty School in Westminster from 21 June 1886 (his sister Harriett started on the same day) and from 8 September 1890 he went to Upper Kennington Lane School in Lambeth London. Also starting the same school on the same day was his brother Albert William Hamlin.

William was awarded the Victory Medal for his service in the Navy during World War One.

William joined the Army on 3 March 1900 and was discharged on 30 November 1902 at Exeter, Devon because he was found medically unfit for further service. He then joined the Navy on 26 August 1906 and was in service until 26 June 1918.

Mabel Alice East was born in Ashford, Kent on 10 September 1882 at 20 West Street, Ashford, Kent to Thomas Edward East and Annie East (Kirby) and died on 25th June 1950 aged 68 at St Stephen's Hospital, Chelsea. She had two children with William Hamlin - Beatrice Mabel Hamlin who was born on 9 May 1908 and Ethel Maud Hamlin who was born on 22 April 1911 at 96 Lavender Hill, Battersea, London, she died on 8th March, 1986 at Flat 2, 19 Macaulay Road, London. She never married or had children. Beatrice Mabel Whitworth (Hamlin) daughter was the informer. Beatrice married Edward Dennis Whitworth on 19 September 1931 in St Paul Church, Battersea, London.
