Frederick's first school was Lavender Hill he then went to Gideon Road in Wandsworth where he started on 25 August 1898, on the same day his brother George Robert Hamlin also started there.

Frederick was 5' 8 3/4" in height and had hazel hair hair and brown eyes.

Florence Hughes was born around 1886 and died on 3 Decemeber 1942 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

On May 15 1915, there was a gasoline explosion in the engine room on the C G S Mildred McColl near Yarmouth, Nova Scotia while Frederick was on duty. He was injured on his right ankle and caused contusion to the left thigh and area. He was in bed for 3 months with the ankle injury. After recovery, he claimed that the pain prevented him from doing drills. The doctor did not believe him and said he was a 'malingerer to a large extent'. The Medical Board declared that he would be fit for duty after 4 months of physical training at Monk's Horton. The board advised that he be disciplined as a malingerer.
